Introduction to Reduction Printing: A Landscape Project. 3-day workshop Saturdays from Sept 27th to Oct 11th

This is an intermediate/advanced level class intended for those that have already participated in my deep-dive introduction to printmaking or similar. This is also a great workshop for those who have just started with reduction printmaking and want to have a guided practice to dig deeper, ask questions, and progress on their printmaking skills. In this workshop I will walk you through the basics of the reduction relief printing technique in which you create multiple layers of color from one single block, which means that once you print one layer, you carve more on the same block and you can’t go back…it’s fun, I promise!
My goal in this three-day workshop is to show you the basics so that you can confidently continue practicing at home. In this class we will cover designing specifically for a reduction print using landscapes as inspiration. I will walk you through each step from design to editioning of the final print keeping the group small so everyone receives the attention they deserve. We will cover: designing for reduction prints, planning layers, creating a master registered sketch, and registration system, briefly review our carving skills, creating a layer plan, carving, printing, and carving and printing some more. We will explore the use of extender and different ways of inking. The goal won’t be to have a perfect edition but to gain the fundamental skills to take your printmaking further! Come ready to play!

WHERE? Berkeley CA, 15 minutes walking from a BART station and with plenty of free parking around. I will send you the details upon booking.
WHAT SHALL YOU BRING? Just your awesome self and a sense of curiosity! If you want, you can bring your own tools. I’ll provide inks, tools, papers and so forth.
FOOD & DRINKS: There will be coffee, tea, and some snacks available. I do not provide lunch but you are welcome to bring your own (we have a nice outdoor area that you are welcome to use). There are also plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby.

WHAT WILL YOU LEAVE WITH? For the class I will provide the tools and materials to work with during the workshop. You will take home: a small edition of prints, what is left of your own carved linocut block, a handout with recommended materials and other tips, and a wonderful new set of skills.
CANCELLATION POLICY: If you need to cancel, please let me know via email at irenka@thewonderstruckprintmaker.comat least 72 hours before the workshop and I will refund the cost minus the Paypal fee I was charged for the transactions. Late cancellations or no-shows won’t receive refunds, as I will be losing the ability to earn my keep that day
